(1998 Benner et al.) New building blocks for nucleic acid engineering
Reports the use of synthetic organic chemistry to systematically modify the structure of DNA and RNA oligonucleotides, yielding 12 replicatable letters (vs. 4 in natural DNA), and modified backbones. This work extends the set of building blocks available for nucleic acid engineering.
